Chapter Twelve

The next morning, Gretchen knocked on Noelle’s door to remind her about the craft lesson she’d agreed to do for their viewers. To Noelle’s surprise, the craft lesson was taking place at Cynthia Coughlin’s house. She and Gretchen walked the two blocks over to Cynthia’s house. Noelle groaned when she saw the front yard covered with blow-up reindeer, elves, and Santa on his sleigh. Twinkling lights outlined the entire house; of course, the centerpiece was a brightly lit and decorated Christmas tree in the front window.

“Are you getting this?” Noelle asked.

Gretchen was already filming. “Got it, boss.”

Noelle rang the bell, not surprised to hear it play “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.” She turned to the camera and rolled her eyes. Words were not needed.

Cynthia opened the door, not surprisingly dressed as Mrs. Claus. Noelle stepped inside. An entire Christmas village stretched out on a table covered with fake snow. The tree was bursting with handmade decorations and swirled with a garland made of popcorn and cranberries. On top of the tree, a star flashed on and off in a kaleidoscope of colors. It was enough to send someone into an epileptic seizure.

The doorbell rang again, and when Cynthia went to answer it, Noelle turned to the camera with a grin. “Looks like Christmas exploded in here.” Gretchen panned the room for added effect, then turned to the doorway where Colin stood. “And here’s our guest crafter,” Noelle said. “The esteemed mayor of Evergreen Creek, Colin Bennett.”

Colin gave a gracious bow, waved to the camera, and walked inside.

Noelle turned to Cynthia. “So today, we’re going to show our viewers a do-it-yourself craft. What will we be making today?”

Cynthia led them to a craft table supplied with greenery, wires, and hot glue guns. “Today, we’re making mistletoe ornaments. As you can see, it takes very little preparation and is easy enough for beginners.”

“God help me,” Noelle murmured. She followed Colin to the craft table and took a seat. She picked up the glue gun. “I’ve never used one of these.”

“Join the club.”

“There’s a glue gun club?”

“No, an amateur crafting club. I’m the president.”

“That’s a step up from mayor.”

“Does that turn you on?”

Noelle wrinkled her nose. “In your dreams.”

Colin laughed. He leaned close and, in a husky whisper, asked, “How do you know what I’m dreaming about?”

Noelle felt something shift inside her. The flirtation wasn’t just for the camera anymore.

Cynthia pulled out a notebook and started reading facts about mistletoe to the camera. “Mistletoe is a symbol of love, hope, and friendship. Mistletoe is commonly used as a decoration around Christmas time. If you and someone else are under the mistletoe, you’re supposed to kiss. Kissing under the mistletoe is said to bring good luck and bad luck if you don’t kiss under it.”

Noelle glanced at Gretchen, who shrugged. Still, she wasn’t convinced Gretchen didn’t have a hand in this mistletoe madness.

Cynthia took her place at the craft table. “First, we’re going to cut the mistletoe into six-inch sections and secure them with a rubber band.
